The Old Quarry, Carramar
The deep history of the rehabilitated the former sand and limestone quarry.
TRANSFORMED BEYOND RECOGNITION
Can you spot markers of the Kilns Estate's historic past?
With such an abundance of natural beauty it’s hard to imagine the site’s past as one of the largest limestone quarries in the Perth Metro Region.
In fact, from the late 1920’s through to 1975 around 6 millions of tons of sand and limestone were removed from the site forming a quarry 20 hectares in size.
Planning and rehabilitation of the site began back in 1994.
Filling in of the 4 million cubic metre void with environmentally friendly materials was completed some 16 years later in 2010 laying the foundations for the new community open space.
Extensive high quality landscaping has produced beautiful gardens and expansive green open space.
The only clues to this site’s deep history are the old lime kilns which have been lovingly restored and worked into the landscape.
